Zero Construction

ZERO CONSTRUCTION is based on the raw basement space of Project Space Sarubia. The exposed concrete infrastructure evokes an inorganic atmosphere—dark, humid, and cave-like—suggestive of minerals and subterranean formations. The space exists in a liminal state between the artificial and the natural.

The work reexamines the processes and phenomena involved in constructing architectural space. The condition of “zero construction” visualizes the simultaneous production of positive and negative space, where construction and void emerge together. Detached from spatiotemporal context and stripped of functional purpose, the concrete-filled site remains solely as a physical environment, overturning the empiricism of conventional spatial experience.

A subterranean site that exists to generate another utopia above ground, an unintended space born of neglect, and an unfinished structure together constitute ZERO CONSTRUCTION. Through this framework, the project invites reflection on the environmental and structural contradictions produced by artificial construction.

ZERO CONSTRUCTION은 프로젝트 스페이스 사루비아 공간의 물리적 지하 구조와 노출 콘크리트 공간에서 비롯되었다. 인공 구조물인 콘크리트 구조는 동시에 어둡고 습한 동굴처럼 무기적이며 광물적인 분위기를 자아내며, 자연과 인공의 경계 사이에 놓인 중간 지대를 형성한다. 이 작업은 건축적 공간이 형성되는 과정과 그 절차, 그리고 그로 인해 발생하는 현상에 대한 재질문에서 출발한다. ‘제로 건설’의 상태는 구축과 해체가 동시에 이루어지는 지점, 즉 긍정적 공간과 부정적 공간이 함께 생성되는 상태를 가시화한다. 기능을 상실한 채 시공간적 맥락에서 절단된 콘크리트 공간은 오직 물리적 환경으로만 남으며, 기존 공간 경험의 경험주의를 전복한다. 지하에 존재하며 또 다른 외부의 유토피아를 생산하기 위한 공간, 의도되지 않은 채 방치된 공간, 완결되지 못한 미완의 공간은 모두 ZERO CONSTRUCTION을 구성하는 요소들이다. 이를 통해 인공적 건설 행위가 야기하는 환경적 문제와 그 구조적 모순을 사유하게 한다.
