Elapsed II

Elapsed II is a site-specific installation based on the concept of “Urban Geology,” viewing the city as a geological structure formed through the accumulation of time. The work was produced for an architectural exhibition held in advance of the construction of the Seoul Museum of Art’s new building, where it was conceived to organically connect and intersect four architectural proposals envisioning the future museum.

The installation compresses the vertical structure of the city—extending from underground to ground level, building floors, and ceilings—and reconstructs it within the exhibition space. Layers of cement and plaster form stratified geological surfaces, while linear lighting elements set at varying heights create additional layers, visualizing the accumulation of time and spatial cross-sections. Through the overlap of material weight and light, the city’s otherwise invisible temporality is revealed.

Accumulated across the exhibition floor, the work functions as a condensed cross-section of the architectural projects presented—sites that remain unrealized futures. The vast scale embedded in this geological landscape is translated into a form that can be physically experienced by viewers, creating tension between actual space and perceptual space. Positioned between architectural imaginaries, 〈Elapsed II〉 proposes space not as a completed structure, but as an ongoing process shaped by the accumulation of time.

〈Elapsed II〉는 ‘도시 지질학’ 개념을 바탕으로, 도시를 시간의 축적에 의해 형성된 지질적 구조로 바라보는 현장 설치 작업이다. 이 작업은 서울시립미술관 신관 건립을 앞두고 열린 건축 전시에서, 네 팀의 건축가가 제안한 미래 미술관 프로젝트를 유기적으로 연결하고 교차시키는 작업으로 제작되었다.

작품은 지하에서 지표면, 건물의 바닥과 천장으로 이어지는 도시 공간의 수직적 구조를 압축해 전시장 안에 재구성한다. 시멘트와 석고를 적층하며 지질층을 형성하고, 그 위에 높낮이가 다른 선형 조명의 층위를 더해 시간의 누적과 공간의 단면을 시각화했다. 물질의 무게와 빛의 레이어가 겹쳐지며, 보이지 않는 도시의 시간성이 드러난다.

전시장 바닥에 쌓여, 전시에서 제안된 건축 프로젝트—아직 실현되지 않은 미래의 장소—를 축약한 단면처럼 작동한다. 지질 풍경이 담는 거대한 스케일은 관람자가 직접 체험할 수 있는 크기로 전환되며, 실제 공간과 인식의 공간 사이에 긴장을 형성한다. 〈Elapsed II〉는 건축적 상상 사이에 개입한 지질적 레이어로서, 공간을 완결된 구조가 아닌 시간의 축적 과정으로 인식하도록 제안한다.
