Evaporation

Events that have occurred testify to time through their traces, only to soon dissipate into the air. Evaporation and Condensation are works that capture and visualize, within time, temporary phenomena that occur between what moves and changes and what becomes fixed and solid.

Aluminum sculptures shaped like water stains form thin membranes across the outdoor floor of the Asia Culture Center, condensing onto the ground’s surface. They seem to follow, yet also disregard, the straight lines of the grid that divides the floor, gathering and dispersing as they trespass boundaries. Circular forms briefly appear where cold air meets a heated surface, then vanish, leaving behind their marks. Are these remnants of water that once pooled and failed to evaporate, or new currents flowing in from elsewhere? That which should disappear and flow away instead shimmers, illuminating its surroundings.

In Sitting, solidified from discarded materials, soil, and cement dust collected from the former Jeonnam Provincial Office, and in Floating, where mud is enclosed within transparent stone, lightness and heaviness coexist. The boundaries of a world once seemingly divided grow blurred, and what floats and what sinks can exchange positions at any moment. The forces of lightness and weight are reversed, embracing one another to reveal a state of becoming a single mass. Stones that have rolled in from elsewhere and come to rest, half-formed lumps, and dust once layered along each step exist as sediments of continuous time, disappearing and generating anew.

일어난 사건은 흔적으로 시간을 증명하고, 이내 공기 중으로 사라진다. 증발과 응결은 움직이고 변하는 것과 고정되고 단단한 것 사이에 일어나는 일시적 현상을 시간 속에 붙잡아 가시화하는 작업이다.
금속으로 만들어진 물자국 형태의 조각은 아시아 문화전당의 야외 바닥에 얇은 막을 형성하며 지표면에 응집한다. 바닥 위에 격자로 나뉘어진 직선을 따라가는 듯 무시하며, 모였다 흩어지면서 경계를 침범한다. 뜨거운 바닥에 차가운 공기로 잠시 나타난 동그라미들은 사라지고 그 흔적을 남겨둔다. 과거에 고여있던 물이 증발하지 못하고 남아있는 것인가. 아니면 외부에서 밀려드는 새로운 물길인가. 사라지고 흘러가야 할 것이 반짝이며 주변을 비춘다.

구전남도청에서 수집한 폐자재, 흙, 시멘트 가루들을 굳힌 조각 침전물과 투명한 돌 안에 모래를 가둬놓은 부유물에는 가벼움과 무거움이 공존한다. 평화로운 듯 둘로 나눠져있던 세상의 경계는 흐려지고, 부유하던 것들과 가라앉는 것들은 언제든지 그 위치를 교환할 수 있다. 가벼움과 무거움의 힘은 뒤바뀌고, 서로를 품으며 한 덩어리가 된 상태를 드러낸다. 어디선가 굴러와 멈춰진 돌과 반쪽자리 덩어리들, 계단 층층마다 쌓여져있던 먼지들이 사라지고 생성하는 연속적 시간의 퇴적물로 존재한다.
