Watchhouse

Watchhouse consists of a structure scaled to the size of a one-person guard post, composed of frames that can be opened and closed. Shade nets are attached to each frame, allowing the interior to be concealed while blocking light from the outside. Once inside, the body disappears from others’ view. At the same time, the act of opening and shutting the frames produces a shifting perspective, reversing the position of the subject from being observed to becoming the observer.

This work extends an ongoing exploration of spatial experience developed through site-specific installations, videos, and public interventions. In the earlier work Light Temperature Wind (a feeling of distance), materials originally used as protective shields in Yangji-ri, Cheorwon-gun—a former propaganda village near the DMZ—were adopted to evoke the physical and psychological condition of being “in between.” Watchhouse builds upon this inquiry, continuing an investigation into spaces shaped by division, visibility, and distance.

〈Watchhouse〉는 한 사람이 들어갈 수 있는 경계 초소의 크기로 제작된 구조물로, 열고 닫을 수 있는 프레임들로 이루어져 있다. 각 프레임에는 차광망이 부착되어 있어 외부의 시선을 차단하고 빛을 가린다. 내부에 들어선 몸은 타인의 시선에서 사라지며, 동시에 프레임을 여닫는 행위를 통해 관찰의 위치가 전환되는 경험을 하게 된다. 관찰되는 대상에서 관찰자로 이동하는 감각은 공간 안에서 끊임없이 뒤집힌다.

이 작품은 장소 특정적 설치, 영상, 공공 개입 작업을 통해 공간의 경험을 탐구해온 작업의 연장선에 놓여 있다. 이전 작업 〈Light Temperature Wind (a feeling of distance)〉에서는 비무장지대 인근 철원 양지리의 옛 선전마을에서 사용되었던 차폐 재료를 활용해, 경계와 분리의 공간에서 형성되는 ‘사이(in-between)’의 물리적·심리적 상태를 다루었다. 〈Watchhouse〉는 이러한 문제의식을 확장하며, 분단과 감시, 가시성과 거리감에 의해 형성된 공간 속에서 개인의 위치와 인식이 어떻게 전도되는지를 탐구한다.
