Tectonic Memories IV

I needed something to fill the time that had been left empty.

People who seemed familiar yet felt awkward, objects that were new yet strangely recognizable.
Returning to the country after more than twenty years, I found myself once again an outsider.

The cold, overcast sea pulls back the water it had pushed away.

The waves, crashing in repetition, alter the shape of my memory.

I crouch down, searching the ground, gathering the fragments that remain in my hands.

Wordless stories accumulate on the surface, forming an unfamiliar landscape.

A gap opens between closed sheets of paper, and waves ripple across it.

Who has taken the memories that were left behind?

The exhibition 〈Glass Beach〉 originates from the experiences of curator Park Ki-hyun and the artist, who visited Vladivostok at different times. Through conversations about the same place, the exhibition takes shape from the gaps between memories—accumulated and transformed differently over time.

The curator evokes layers of time through a text centered on his grandfather’s personal history, while the artist responds with an installation in which glass pebbles collected from the beaches of Vladivostok are inserted between stacks of white paper. Embedded between the sheets, the glass fragments suggest unrecorded time and memories that could not be translated into words, creating a site where experiences from different temporal moments intersect materially.

〈Words〉 is the fourth work in the Tectonic Memories series, which began in London in 2017. The project involves collecting minerals encountered during travel and reconstructing the narratives surrounding them, observing the depth of the earth’s surface to reveal hidden layers of time. The series includes Chapter I. Romance (2017), Chapter II. Separation (2017), and Chapter III. Journey (2018).

비워둔 시간을 채울만한 것이 필요했다. 친숙해 보이지만 어색한 사람들과 새롭지만 익숙한 사물들.

20여년이 지나고 찾아온 나라에서 나는 다시 이방인이 되었다.

흐리고 차가운 바다가 밀어낸 물을 다시 당긴다. 반복하며 들이치는 물살은 나의 기억을 바꿔 놓았다.

쭈그리고 앉아 바닥을 뒤져 남겨진 부스러기들을 손에 담아 본다.

단어 없는 이야기가 바닥에 쌓여져 어색한 풍경을 만든다. 닫힌 종이 사이에 공간이 생기고 그 위로 파도가 일렁인다. 두고간 기억들은 누가 가져갔을까?

전시 〈유리해변〉은 박기현 큐레이터와 작가가 각기 다른 시간에 블라디보스톡을 방문한 경험에서 출발했다. 동일한 장소를 두고 나눈 대화 속에서, 시간에 따라 다르게 축적되고 변형되는 기억의 간극이 전시의 출발점이 되었다. 기획자는 할아버지에 관한 개인적 기억을 텍스트로 풀어내며 시간의 층위를 호출하고, 작가는 하얀 종이 더미 사이에 블라디보스톡 해변에서 수집한 유리 자갈을 끼워 넣은 설치 작업으로 응답한다. 종이 사이에 끼워진 유리 조각들은 기록되지 않은 시간과 말로 남지 못한 기억을 암시하며, 서로 다른 시간의 경험이 물질적으로 교차하는 지점을 만든다.

〈Words〉는 2017년 런던에서 시작된 텍토닉 메모리(Tectonic Memory) 시리즈의 네 번째 작업으로, 여행 중 발견한 광물을 수집하고 그를 둘러싼 이야기를 재구성하는 프로젝트이다. 지표면의 깊이를 관찰하며 숨겨진 시간의 층위를 드러내는 이 시리즈는 Chapter I. Romance (2017), Chapter II. Separation (2017), Chapter III. Journey (2018)로 이어져왔다.
