Phantom pain refers to the sensation of pain felt in a part of the body that no longer exists. Two stones, each with one cut surface, make it impossible to determine whether they were originally one single stone or two separate ones. The forms of the cut stones, which appear differently as light and position continuously shift, present new appearances that are unrelated to their past shapes.

The indeterminate state in which the body attaches itself to the continuously changing metal on the cut stone, at times appearing and at other times disappearing, exists within a condition of presence and absence that is perceived and remembered differently depending on the era and the individual. As we stand on the observation deck of the observatory tower and look out at the landscape of the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea, we encounter a paradoxical situation in which we sense what has disappeared or is no longer present within our perception. In this moment, we come to realize that memory exerts a stronger influence than the physical presence or absence of material existence.

환상통이란 더 이상 존재하지 않는 신체의 부위에서 고통을 느끼는 것이다. 각각 한 면이 절단된 두 개의 돌은 본래 서로 하나였는지 혹은 다른 두 개의 돌이었는지 알 수 없다. 지속적으로 빛과 위치에 따라 변화하며 보이는 절단된 돌의 형상은 과거 돌의 형상과는 무관하게 새로운 모습을 보인다. 잘려 나간 돌 위에 계속해서 변하는 금속에 몸을 붙여 존재하기도 하고 사라지기도 하는 불확정적 상태는 시대에 따라 사람에 따라 다르게 지각하고 기억하는 존재-부재의 상황에 놓여 있다. 도라산 전망대에 올라서서 DMZ풍경을 바라보는 동안 우리는 인식 속에서 사라지고 없는 부분을 감각하는 모순된 상황에 놓이고, 물리적 존재의 유무보다 기억의 작동에 더 강한 영향을 받는 것을 발견할 수 있다.
