Twilight Zone

The twilight zone is the fleeting interval when the light of sunset lingers, occupying a threshold between day and night as perceptual systems shaped by daylight begin to shift into darkness. This faint, short-lived light is often imagined as a realm of illusion and psychological unknowns.

The land and the sea are likewise divided by stages of light. On land, the twilight zone refers to places of blurred boundaries or marginal spaces; in the ocean, it denotes the deepest layer reached by light—the mesopelagic, or “twilight,” zone.

Within the boundary between day and night created by the Earth’s rotation, the outlines and colors of things gradually fade, an experience both familiar and elusive. Whether an object itself changes within the flow of light, or whether perception alone responds to this shift, remains uncertain. The essence of things exceeds perception. Just before the sun sinks beyond the horizon, light passes through the sea and collides with land, tinting lived space with an ambiguous in-between state.

Marine organisms that rely on minimal light descend during the day and rise at night, drifting between darkness and brightness. Their movement evokes forms of life that traverse boundaries within conditions divided into center and periphery. Between stark contrasts, countless waves emerge. The oscillation of faint light leaves afterimages; within it, objects become pliable and time slows.

Time passes through a thin membrane, separating into here and there. Once divided, it strikes an opposing metallic plane, fracturing and expanding.

At once reminiscent of a potato unearthed from the soil and a mineral from the sea, a familiar, palm-sized mass appears. Within layers of light, this form moves between materiality and immateriality. Through sculptural experimentation, the work explores the fluidity of material boundaries and the subtle calibration of the senses that perceive them.

트왈라잇 존은 해가 지는 찰나의 빛이 머무는 시간으로, 낮 동안 선명했던 인식 체계가 밤으로 이행하는 과정의 중간 단계에 위치한다. 오래 지속되지 않는 이 희미한 빛은 환상과 미지의 심리적 세계로 상상되기도 한다. 우리가 살고 있는 육지와 바다 또한 빛의 단계로 나뉜다. 육상에서의 트와라이트 존은 경계가 불분명한 장소나 변두리를 지칭하며, 바다에서는 빛이 도달하는 가장 깊은 층, 즉 약광층을 의미한다.

지구의 자전으로 인해 형성되는 낮과 밤의 경계 속에서, 사물의 윤곽과 색이 흐려지는 경험은 익숙하다. 동일한 존재가 빛의 흐름 속에서 변화하는 것인지, 혹은 감각이 반응한 결과인지는 분명하지 않다. 사물의 실체는 인식을 넘어선다. 해가 수평선 너머로 넘어가기 직전, 빛은 바다를 통과하고 육지와 충돌하며 삶의 공간을 불확실한 중간 지대로 물들인다.

약한 빛에 의존해 살아가는 바다 속 생명체는 낮에는 가라앉고 밤에는 떠오르며 어둠과 밝음 사이를 유영한다. 이러한 존재는 중심과 주변으로 이분화된 조건 속에서 경계를 오가는 삶의 양상을 환기한다. 극명한 대비 사이에는 수많은 파동이 일어나고, 희미한 빛의 파동은 잔상을 남긴다. 그 빛 속에서 사물은 유연해지고 시간은 지연된다. 시간은 얇은 막을 통과하며 이곳과 저곳으로 나뉘고, 분리된 시간은 다시 반대편의 금속판에 부딪혀 쪼개지고 확장된다. 땅속에서 캐낸 감자처럼 보이기도 하고, 바다의 광물을 연상시키기도 하는 한 손에 잡힐 만한 크기의 덩어리. 이 익숙한 형태는 빛의 층위 속에서 물질과 비물질의 경계를 오간다.

조각적 실험은 이러한 경계의 유동성과, 이를 감지하는 감각이 어떻게 조율되는지를 탐색한다.
