Conceived for the inaugural exhibition celebrating the opening of Taichung’s major public art and library institution, Green Museumbrary, designed by SANAA. , the project <Wheels within Wheels> questions the challenging task of achieving balance as a human being confronting the crisis between society and individual and suggests alternative ways of engagement. It consists of two parts, each presenting distinct sculptures with unique physical and symbolic characteristics.

The larger sculpture, measuring about 3 meters, is inspired by the shape of an oloid—a three-dimensional curved geometric form. An oloid is created by placing two congruent circles in perpendicular planes, where the center of each circle touches the edge of the other. When combined, these two circles, reminiscent of a round table and a wheel, form a structure capable of rolling across the floor. The domestic (the table) and the industrial (the wheel) exchange their weights as they roll, though in an uneven and unpredictable manner. The five colors used in the work- red, blue, yellow, black and white are “Obangsaek”. It refers to the traditional Korean color system composed of five cardinal colors derived from East Asian philosophy. These colors correspond to directions, elements, and cosmic balance, symbolizing harmony between nature, humanity, and the universe.

The smaller sculpture, less than 1 meter in diameter, consists of a cluster of buoys, collected from various seasides, all presumed to have travelled from the seas of China, Japan and Korea.

Constructed from glass, porcelain, and steel, this mass suggests an entanglement of their past journeys which has finally landed on the shifting territory of the museum. The project aims to engage the public in the process, transforming the static nature of the sculpture and activating both the artwork and the museum space itself.

타이중의 대규모 공공 예술, 도서관 복합 기관인 그린 뮤지엄브러리 Green Museumbrary 개관을 기념하는 개막 전시를 위해 기획된 프로젝트 Wheels within Wheels 는 사회와 개인 사이의 위기속에서 살아가는 균형에 대해 질문하며, 그에 대한 대안적 관여 방식을 제안한다.

본 프로젝트는 서로 다른 물리적, 상징적 특성을 지닌 두 개의 조각으로 구성된다.

대형 조각은 올로이드oloid의 3차원 곡면 기하 형태에서 출발한다. 올로이드는 서로 직각으로 놓인 두 개의 동일한 원이 서로의 중심이 상대 원의 가장자리에 닿도록 배치될 때 형성된다. 둥근 테이블과 바퀴를 연상시키는 이 두 원이 결합되어 굴러갈 수 있는 구조가 된다. 굴러가는 과정에서 가정적 영역(테이블)과 산업적 영역(바퀴)은 무게를 교환하지며 움직이지만, 그 움직임은 불균형하고 예측 불가능하다.

작품에 사용된 다섯 가지 색, 적, 청, 황, 흑, 백은 동아시아 철학에 기반한 전통 색체계인 오방색으로, 방향과 원소, 우주적 균형을 상징하며 자연, 인간, 우주 간의 조화를 드러낸다. 소형 조각은 여러 해안에서 수집된 부표들이 군집을 이룬 형태로 중국, 일본, 한국의 바다를 거쳐 이동해온 것으로 추정된다. 유리, 도자, 철로 구성된 덩어리는 각기 다른 항해의 궤적이 얽혀 마침내 미술관 영토 위에 도달한 상태를 암시한다. 관객의 참여를 통해 조각의 정적인 성격을 전환시키며, 작품과 미술관 공간 자체를 함께 활성화한다.
